Los áridos naturales pueden provenir de dos tipos de yacimientos:
- YACIMIENTOS DE ARENAS, GRAVAS Y CONGLOMERADOS.
- YACIMIENTOS DE ROCAS CANTERABLES PARA ARIDOS DE MACHAQUEO.
Basándonos en los tres grupos principales de rocas, de acuerdo con su origen (Más que con su composición o resistencia) los yacimientos de piedras canterables darán lugar a:
- ARIDOS DE ROCAS IGNEAS.
- ARIDOS DE ROCAS METAMORFICAS. -ARIDOS DE ROCAS SEDIMENTARIAS.
En general los áridos naturales se agrupan, en cuanto a su origen, en tres grandes familias:
- Los aluviales, machacada o no.
- Las calizas
- Los ígneos y metamórficos
